December 21! Winter Solstice! It’s the longest night of the year, but that’s okay because from this point on, the days grow longer. It will be imperceptible at first, then as January wears on we will begin to notice that the dark is taking longer to arrive. In February, here on the west coast I start thinking about Spring and what kind of gardening I might like to do this year, and the days and nights begin to even out. The crows will be flying home across my windows just a bit later and later every evening. And by March, we’ll have forgotten once again the dark time of the year. It will be time to focus on renewal. For now, though, we’re still in the dark.
People look east, the time is near
For the crowning of the year.
Make your house fair as you are able
Trim the hearth and set the table.
People look east and sing today:
Love, the guest, is on the way.
